Piano Lessons with Teacher Josephine

Piano lessons with ‘Teacher Jo’, as my students affectionately call me, are conducted in my home studio on a  Yamaha C1 Grand Piano.

There is no “right” age to begin learning the piano — every student starts their journey in their own time. The youngest student I have taught was just years old.

Over the years, I have worked with a diverse range of students, including young children in their early years, primary to secondary school students, college students, working adults, stay-at-home mums, and retirees. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities, including both local and international schools.

Philosophy & Learning Approach

As a piano teacher, my work goes beyond notes and music theory. Teaching is not simply about following a lesson book or playing exactly as written. My goal is to nurture well-rounded musicians — students who are not only able to succeed in exams but also develop musical literacy, technical proficiency, and expressive artistry.

Each lesson is thoughtfully tailored to the individual, helping students progress at their own pace while building confidence, skill, and a genuine love for music.

For beginners, lessons focus on building a solid foundation: confident music reading, a well-trained ear, steady rhythm, and strong, reliable technique. With this approach, many students develop the ability to play comfortably with both hands, gaining both skill and enjoyment from the start.

For intermediate students, the focus expands to refining technique, exploring musical expression, and strengthening sight-reading and performance skills, allowing students to play with greater confidence, control, and musicality.

For advanced students, lessons are designed to prepare for exams, auditions, and recitals while cultivating depth, artistry, and mastery of technique. Students learn to express themselves musically with nuance, precision, and confidence, bringing their performances to life.

Some students, particularly those transferring from other teachers, may need targeted support in specific areas such as sight-reading or aural skills, and these can be addressed through focused, personalised practice.

Across all levels, my approach emphasizes:

  • Building strong, lasting fundamentals

  • Developing musical expression and artistry

  • Encouraging curiosity, enjoyment, and a lifelong love for music

I have guided each of them in achieving their own musical goals — whether playing for enjoyment, working towards piano examinations, or fulfilling a lifelong dream of learning the piano.

Lesson Structure

My lessons are well rounded, holistic and engaging:

  • Individual piano and theory lessons tailored to each student’s goals and learning style

  • Group lessons for collaboration, ensemble playing, and shared learning

  • Performance opportunities to build confidence, stage presence, and musical expression

  • Exam and audition preparation to guide students towards their milestones with structured guidance

Music Exams
Students may choose to attempt piano exams at any stage of their learning. Exams serve as both important milestones and motivational benchmarks. I prepare students for piano exams conducted by reputable boards such as ABRSM and Trinity College, helping them approach each assessment with confidence, technique, and musicality.
