Lessons with me are conducted on a Yamaha C1 Grand Piano in my home studio. There is no “right” age to start learning piano — the youngest student I have taught was just 3.5 years old.
Beginner – Elementary (Grades 1-3)
Beginner lessons will focus on building a strong foundation in music fundamentals, including notation, rhythm, melody, and basic theory. Emphasis is also placed on good technique and developing aural awareness.
Consistent practice helps students gain confidence and flow in their playing. By the end of the early elementary stage, children should demonstrate an understanding of simple dance styles or basic expressions of mood in music.
Intermediate – (Grades 4-5)
As the student progresses into the intermediate stage, students expand their technical skills and explore a wider repertoire across different musical styles and periods. They would also gain broader musical knowledge about the piano, and the composers and the historical music context. Musical perception and interpretation can be introduced to enrich understanding and performance.
Advanced – (Grades 6-8)
Advanced students will have typically developed strong sight-reading abilities and musical aptitude, enabling them to tackle the more challenging repertoire of higher grades. Lessons focus on refining technique, expression, and performance skills, preparing students for exams, recitals, and auditions.
Diploma / Post Grade 8
For students pursuing Diploma-level study or equivalent, lessons focus on advanced piano performance, interpretation, and musicianship. Students develop:
-
Refined technique for complex repertoire
-
Artistic interpretation across various musical styles and periods
-
Advanced sight-reading and aural skills
-
Performance readiness for recitals, competitions, or examinations
Lessons at this stage are highly tailored to the student’s goals, whether preparing for Diploma exams, auditions, or playing for self development. Emphasis is placed on developing a unique musical voice, fostering independence, and cultivating artistry at a professional standard.
